Description
A female Giant Ichneumon Wasp (on the right) challenges another female who is in the process of laying her eggs via an ovipositor drilled into the tree. It seems that competition for laying sites can be very intense. These wasps are harmless to humans.

F/L This is a fantastic capture! I think they are beautiful and, may I repeat what you've said for your future readers, completely harmless to people. Magnificent work.

Thank you so much Mother Nature. I was very happy to find these interesting and beautiful insects!

An excellent image of a sight few people see- simply wonderful Doris! Most likely she is depositing her egg directly onto the larva of wood boring insect, which are frequently the larva of flat headed or round headed beetles. Ichneumon wasps are fascinating.... but I'm biased since I have a BS in entomology.
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks so much Tim! Entomology must be fascinating. Would you know why there is such a significant difference in size between these two females?
