The mystery has been solved! This beautiful caterpillar is a Hitched Arches (Melanchra adjuncta) and as Mother Nature surmised, it is a moth.
Mother Nature
PS: Is that a little horn on his rear end?
Doris Potter replied:
I checked my other images (from different angles) and I think it may be a "split tail". It's hard to tell.

F/L This is an absolute beauty! I have no idea what it is but probably a moth. If you ever want a superb caterpillar reference book, check this out - Caterpillars of Eastern North America, by David L Wagner, Princeton Field Guide. It is a treasure. I did take a look through the book but didn't immediately see this gorgeous creature. I'll look closer and longer tomorrow:>) WOW
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Mother Nature. Actually I do have this field guide (I appreciate the reference) but I've gone through the whole book without seeing this one. Maybe I missed it though so I would be happy if you gave it a look too!
