When I returned to the "nursery" later in the day, the baby spiders were all clustered together. I presume they do this as a protective measure.

If they are startled they would probably disperse in the flash of an eye. I've puffed on a mass of spiderlings like this just watch them run (mean me), Did you check the surrounding area for Mom?

Actually no, I didn't think of it. I guess I assumed they hatch and then fend for themselves.
