Description
This gorgeous caterpillar was on a thin woody plant growing among Arrowheads and Pickerel Weed in a pond. I was trying for a better background but was crouched in an awkward position and was trying not to slip off my rock! He proved to be a most patient subject and endured several minutes of my lens invading his personal space!

Yes Doris! Almost every single one has lived to become a beautiful butterfly. My Pre-Flight Black Swallowtail photo shows one of them just a couple hours after emerging and just before it's first flight. http://fineartamerica.com/featured/pre-flight-black-swallowtail-robert-e-alter-reflections-of-infinity.html

Nice caterpillar shot Doris! I grow Dill as a host plant for Black Swallowtails, and we get quite a few, but they usually get eaten before they get this big unless I bring them in.
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Robert. I would have them all indoors! Have you ever had them pupate and emerge as butterflies?

They dont care ,they are such busy munchers ,they dont care if you are there for the day ;) HA ! These guys are so much like the monarch caterpilars. You are Finding alot of small Hidden Treasures these days Sweet P !!! Nice Work !!! Its excitting isnt it ,its amazing what goes on in a bush
Doris Potter replied:
I guess you are right Kathy! :-) You know, I thought it was a Monarch caterpillar at first and then I thought of a swallowtail but wasn't sure which one. The Black Swallowtail is one of my favorite butterflies. "Hidden treasures" is right - I am blessed!
