Description
This beautiful insect was found July 15th in the Fletcher Wildlife Garden in Ottawa, Canada. It looks similar to the Steel Blue Cricket Hunter (see photo in the insect gallery) but is at least twice its size. This one was busy feeding on the Swamp Milkweed and had a disconcerting habit, when feeling harassed, of coming and hovering inches in front of my face. This would cause me to back off and then it would continue to feed. We did this little dance three or four times but it never did more than threaten.

Thanks Kathy. It is amazing that we find so often the same subjects. I just heard on the news tonight that Giant Swallowtails have been found in Montreal (it made the news!). I would love to photograph one!

PS: I find feeding wasps to be pretty darn reasonable about a human's intrusion. I've only been stung when I stepped on or brushed a nest or accidently got one caught in clothing or between me and the car seat. Your experience is much like mine; I'm glad you weren't stung - be careful - but I really love your pictures.
Doris Potter replied:
I guess when they are busy feeding they don't want to have to stop and sting (at least I will cling to that hope ()). Thanks for saying you love my pictures. It really makes me feel good and it makes me eager to find new subjects to post.
Doris Potter replied:
Hmmm. I put a symbol for "grin" between those parentheses but it didn't come through.
