When I found this butterfly I knew it was something special because it is a European butterfly but I did not realize that it is exceedingly rare in North America and was first found in the Montreal area in 1997. I believe that fewer than two dozen sightings have been recorded in the twenty years hence. The predominant theory is that a female with eggs inadvertently came across the ocean on a ship.
My passion is to express Nature's beauty through photography. I am self-taught and like things simple. Thus, photo manipulation is kept to a minimum. You are so lucky Doris! To see this beautiful butterfly, and to get such a lovely shot of it. I've never seen anything like it around here (southwest Ohio) although it reminds me a little of the Buckeye butterflies. I hope they thrive and spread my way so I can see one too.

I hope you do get to see one Robert! You know, I first thought of a Buckeye because I thought that would make more sense (a North American butterfly) and then I think my jaw dropped when I realized it was a Peacock.
