Description
As I was walking along a city street to reach a nature park I heard loud tapping and saw this beauty on a tree in front of a house! You never know when wildlife will present itself! The red stripe extending from the beak identifies it as a male (I had to look that up AGAIN as I always forget. :-))

Great capture ,Doris! I was surprised by one peeking around a tree as I photographed a stream. They are large and prehistoric looking. Congrats!

Great shot Doris! I have trouble remembering the names of the more unusual woodpeckers too.
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Robert. It was mainly trying to remember the male vs female coloring. But sometimes I am hopeless! :-)

Great capture, Doris. I have managed only one pic. so far, and they are so shy. i'ina
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks i'ina. You are right about them being shy. I've been lucky to find them very intent on feeding/pecking and they pretty much ignore me then. I hope you'll get more shots!

This is an incredible picture, Doris! We have them coming to our suet and they are impressive birds. You've done them proud!!!! V/F
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks so much Carol. Another case of being "camera ready" for an unexpected opportunity. I am really lucky!

Very nice capture! Love the pileated, we see them from time to time. v/f
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks April. They seem to be more and more numerous around here. I thought they were a northern bird and didn't realize you had them in Florida!
